The Decliner was created as an expression of La-Z-Boy's "Long Live the Lazy" campaign, giving winners of the contest a chance to win their own Decliner.
The Decliner used a retrofitted switch connected to the interior handle and axle mechanism to trigger when the user reclined.

When the user received a last-minute invite, they could pull the handle on their chair, which then a function was triggered on the chair's onboard controller that communicated with a webserver. The server would then receive a response from ChatGPT through thoroughly engineered prompts. That response was then vetted with OpenAI's moderation API and if passed, forwarded to Twilio to then text to the chair's registered user, where they can forward it where needed.

10 Chairs were made for influencer distribution as well as contest winners. The escutcheon under the handle on the chair was replaced with a custom designed and model encasing an LED ring to show status when the chair was operating.
An accompanying landing page was created for contest entries, featuring a working browser version of the Decliner.
The Decliner won PRWeek's 2024 Best in Technology award.
